THC-V: The “Diet” Cannabinoid

THC-V (tetrahydrocannabivarin) is a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in both the marijuana and hemp varietals of the cannabis plant. It is structurally similar to THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the well-known psychoactive component of cannabis, but has a different chemical structure and properties. THC-V is thought to have various potential medicinal properties, including appetite suppression, inflammation regulation and mood support.* However, we must note that more research is needed to fully understand the potential benefits of THC-V.

THC-V is generally considered not to have psychoactive effects.* To understand how that is a strong possibility, let’s first dig into how cannabinoids work in the body through our natural endocannabinoid systems (ECS). The ECS is a complex biological system found in humans and many other animals that regulates various physiological and cognitive processes, including appetite, pain, sleep cycles, mood, memory and overall homeostasis of the body.* The ECS consists of three main components: endocannabinoids, receptors, and enzymes.

Endocannabinoids are naturally occurring lipid-based molecules that act on the receptors within the ECS. Endocannabinoids are naturally-occurring molecules produced by the body. While cannabinoids are molecules found in different types of fruits, vegetables, plants and cannabis (like CBD, THC, THC-V and so on). The active compounds found in cannabis plant varietals – hemp and marijuana – operate on two types of ECS receptors in our bodies. However, not all cannabinoids work on both (like, THC-V).

Receptors are proteins that are found on the surface of cells throughout the body and in the brain. There are two main types of receptors in the ECS: CB1 receptors, which are primarily found in the brain and nervous system, and CB2 receptors, which are mainly found in immune cells and peripheral tissues.*

Enzymes are responsible for the synthesis and breakdown of endocannabinoids. Two key enzymes involved in the ECS are fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) and monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL). When the body produces endocannabinoids, they bind to cannabinoid receptors for various physiological responses. Because CB1 receptors are mainly found in the brain and central nervous system, their activation is associated with regulating pain, mood and memory.* CB2 receptors are mainly found in immune cells and peripheral tissues, so their activation is associated with anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects.*

THC-V and Psychoactive Properties (aka “getting high”): THC-V has a lower affinity for the CB1 receptors in the brain that are responsible for the "high" associated with D9 or D8 THC.* This means that there is a probability that THC-V is less likely to cause the undesirable psychoactive effects that are typically associated with THC, such as anxiety and paranoia.*

THC-V and Appetite: THC-V is known as the “diet” cannabinoid. THC-V is a partial agonist at CB1 receptors, which are primarily responsible for regulating appetite and food intake.* This means that it can activate these receptors to some extent, but not as strongly as THC.* This reduced activation of CB1 receptors may contribute to the appetite-suppressing effects of THC-V.*

In addition, THC-V may also interact with other receptors and signaling pathways that are involved in appetite regulation.* For example, THC-V has been shown to activate the TRPV1 receptor, which regulates energy metabolism and food intake.*

The THC-V found in our Lift Off D8 gummies isn’t your run-of-the-mill THC-V. We applied a patented technology to the cannabinoid so it is far more potent and enters your bloodstream directly, reducing liver degradation and onset time. This means that the THC-V should activate in your body before the D8 THC. We did this for four reasons:

  1. Increase the likelihood that THC-V will lessen the typical feeling of the “munchies” that come with the use of THC.* With the technology, the THC-V will activate before the D8 THC, meaning it will be in play before the D8, and in turn, hopefully, get a head start on squashing the urge to snack.*
  2. Decrease the amount of THC-V needed per dose. The proprietary technology brings the THC-V directly to your bloodstream, bypassing the liver and any degradation that typically occurs with cannabinoids that do not have the technology attached. Accordingly, your body may absorb up to 10X more.*
  3. Decrease the cost of the Lift Off product. THC-V is a costly cannabinoid and the state of our current economy is not lost on us at NOVA. We want to offer this cutting-edge cannabinoid to women at a cost-effective, competitive price. The technology used allows us to do that by reducing the amount of THC-V needed in each gummy to have the desired effect.
  4. Increase the likelihood that THC-V will stimulate energy systems.* It is time that a THC product exists that doesn’t leave a consumer feeling stuck in time with hours passing by. Because the THC-V acts before the D8, the intent is that, as with the reduction in munchies, the cannabinoid will stimulate clarity and energy.*

The Technology

Lexaria Bioscience’s patented DehydraTECH™ process is a Self-Emulsifying Delivery System (SEDS). SEDS technologies are used in high-end bio-delivery processes and in NOVA’s case, they can be applied to cannabinoid molecules such as THC-V (and CBD in Breakthrough). These methodologies are a scientifically-proven means of enhancing the bioavailability of poorly soluble substances, like cannabinoids.* Simply put, the tech is how the cannabinoids (along with a ‘carrier’ agent) used in our products reach your bloodstream. The highly precise technology was developed to work with your body, so a galaxy of benefits comes tagging along.

Benefits of the tech may include*:

  • Increased bio-absorption (your body gets more): up to 10X versus other delivery methods*
  • Reduced onset to just minutes from hours (feel it faster)*
  • Up to 8x faster than standard delivery methods (lightning speed)*
  • Masks unwanted tastes and smells (no “hemp” bitterness or smell)*
  • CBD is absorbed through the lymph system directly into your bloodstream to avoid liver degradation (it’s potent)*
  • DehydraTECH avoids first-pass liver metabolism: the potency of the dose per serving does not experience the 75-85% reduction that typically occurs*
  • Backed by both clinical studies and human clinical trials*
  • Robust intellectual property has 28 patents and roughly 50 pending worldwide (certified too legit to quit)*

 How It works:

A Cliff Notes version; it’s really very simple.

The patented technology envelopes the THC-V molecule with a specific long-chain fatty acid (LCFA or LCT) and through a precise dehydration process combines it with a dissolvable powdered substrate (such as baker's sugar used in Lift Off). During that process, the THC-V is plated or ‘locked’ to the substrate allowing the substrate to carry the THC-V into the body like a trojan horse, aka a ride share. Once the product is ingested, the LCT+THC-V is released from the substrate and then acts as a chylomicron.* Chylomicrons are produced in the body’s small intestine and take certain molecules and lipids like THC-V, to the bloodstream through the lymph system. Accordingly, the tech-infused THC-V takes the same path as chylomicrons into your bloodstream*.

And, bam! A complete THC-V molecule is in your bloodstream.* Super easy, right? There’s actually a lot more to it.

Current Research

NOVA always strives to offer our universe of women complete transparency on the ingredients used in our products. Our standard is to always seek compounds that have been clinically tried in some form. However, because THC-V is just now growing in popularity as a minor cannabinoid, not a lot of research has been performed. Indeed, there are limited studies on the specific benefits of THC-V (tetrahydrocannabivarin) for women – and the human population in general – and more research is needed to fully understand its potential uses and effects. Please remember that the THC-V in Lift Off is a natural (not synthetic) cannabinoid derived from hemp.

Some studies suggest that THC-V may have potential therapeutic benefits for certain conditions that are more common in women.* For example, one study – “ "The Effects of Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) On Human Appetite and Food Intake" – published in The Journal Psychopharmacology found that THC-V may help with appetite suppression and weight loss, which could be beneficial for women who are trying to manage weight concerns or related health conditions.* Additionally, some research suggests that THC-V may have anti-inflammatory effects, which could be helpful for women with conditions such as arthritis or autoimmune issues.*

The study involved 14 healthy volunteers who were given either a placebo or a single dose of THC-V before being offered a buffet-style meal. The researchers found that those who were given THC-V had a reduced desire to eat and consumed fewer calories compared to those who received the placebo.* Participants who received the THC-V were given a single dose of 10 mg of THC-V in the form of an oral capsule. The participants received either the 10 mg THC-V capsule or a placebo capsule 90 minutes before the buffet-style meal. The researchers found that the 10 mg dose of THC-V was well-tolerated by the participants.* The study was conducted at the University of Westminster, London, collaborating with researchers from the University of Reading and GW Pharmaceuticals.
